I just celebrated a year of breastfeeding! I know this isn’t the case for everyone but I really loved – really LOVED – breastfeeding and wish we could keep going. But I started to struggle with a low supply once we started baby-led weaning so one year of breastfeeding is both a celebration and the end of this season.
When I was pregnant I assumed that good moms used milk storage bags (hint: they do!) but I didn’t bother to look into other options that might be a better fit for my values. 7 weeks in we switched from plastic baggies to Mason jars.
The bags I had used were BPA free so that’s good (BPA is a hormone disruptor) but plastic is still plastic.
Why I don’t love plastic for milk storage:
- Plastic can leech into precious breastmilk
- Plastic ends up in a landfill

The mini mason jars actually hold the same amount of milk as a baggie and the next size up jar holds WAY MORE than a baggie!
When it’s time for a bottle, I switch the flat lid out for a Mason Bottle nipple.
The mason jars take up less space in a freezer (they are also stackable) and I didn’t have to keep buying them throughout our breastfeeding journey.

Once we moved into the sippy cup phase I didn’t have to purchase a separate cup, just the sippy cup tops with straws from Mason Bottle!
I appreciate that the straws are thick enough so baby girl can drink her smoothies and even applesauce through them. Need a water bottle (or travel cup for yourself mama)? Just remove the straw!
